About VALBEC - Victorian Adult Literacy Basic Education Council

The Victorian Adult Literacy Basic Education Council (VALBEC) is the peak body for the adult literacy field in Victoria, established in 1978, following the formation of ACAL (Australian Council for Adult Literacy).

What is our mission?

VALBEC aims to lead the adult literacy field through identifying issues and facilitating positive change. This is achieved through:

• networking

• professional development

• sharing information

• promoting best practice.

Members are able to:

• Have input into VALBEC lobbying and policy advice activities such as accredited curriculum consultations and proposed changes to funding policies

• Be represented on a national basis through our VALBEC delegate on the ACAL committee

• Stand for election to the general committee

• Become a member of a sub committee such as Fine Print or Conference Planning.

We are managed by a general committee comprised of volunteer members from a range of adult education settings. Our members come from a range of contexts: ACFE providers across the state, TAFE Colleges, LANT programs, WELL programs, Tertiary students and affiliated organisations with an interest in adult literacy. A contracted Administrative Officer co-ordinates our business operations.
