3. VALBEC presents the first Twilight Forum for 2008 -  Ballarat
“But that’s not ALL the story?
The results of the Adult Literacy and Life Skills (ALLS) survey with a focus on numeracy”
This Forum will look at the results of the Adult Literacy and Life Skills (ALLS) survey that was conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in Australia in 2006 and early 2007.
The ABS figures released in late November last year showed that about 7 million adult Australians lacked the literacy skills to cope with the demands of modern life and work and understand, for example, a newspaper article or read a bus timetable. The figures were worse in other domains of the survey including in numeracy and problem solving. The forum will look at the structure and content of the ALLS survey and what range of information is tested and collected. Key results of the survey data will also be presented with a focus on the numeracy results, including what the figures were for Victoria, what the differences are across different ages, between men and women. Questions and implications for teaching literacy and numeracy will be posed and considered too.
Information about the ALLS is available via the ACAL web site (Australian Council for Adult Literacy) http://www.acal.edu.au
You can download the ACAL position paper 'Moving forward: Towards a Literate Australia' (Jan 2008) prepared by Dave Tout and also find a link to the ABS summary.
Presenter: Dave Tout, Centre for Adult Education and numeracy consultant, and a member of the international numeracy team responsible for developing the numeracy component of the survey and a member of the Reference Group for ALLS in Australia.

4. ACAL’s Next Literacy Live
Adult Literacy in the 21st Century – New literacy skills and new clients.
Monday 3rd March 8:00pm-9:00pm (AEST) in the Literacy Live Room
More session details and how to use  Literacy Live at http://www.acal.edu.au/litlive.htm
The presenter will be Steve Goldberg. Steve has been the Coordinator of the Reading Writing Hotline since 2000 and has, in that role, overseen 40,000 enquiries. Steve has some special insights into where the new demand for literacy teaching may come from.
Some callers to the Reading & Writing Hotline are telling Steve and his team that they need help, not with basic literacy but with the skills to deal with all the new, complex digital environments and technologies they encounter in every aspect of their lives. "I feel overwhelmed by all the new technology around and inadequately prepared to take on new roles" callers often report. Many of these callers are older Australians, who have not been able to find suitable IT training courses or have enrolled in "beginner" courses and have discovered that the teacher expects them to have some pre-existing knowledge including the language of computers.
