One of my presidential duties is to write a mid-year report on our key outputs as an organisation. We will ignore the whiff of ‘KPIs’ in that last sentence to focus solely on the achievements that we have made in 2024 thus far. six Professional Learning sessions (with over 160 people in attendance), an annual conference with an international leader in the field of Adult Education and Literacy, not to mention the literacy, numeracy and basic education that was imparted to those who attended by the outstanding presentations. Fine Print’s first edition celebrated the Reading and Writing Hotline’s 30th anniversary and featured some terrific LLND resources explored by Rose-Anne Polvere amongst other resources. And this is without mentioning the great work the committee does in raising awareness of issues in CGEA and EAL frameworks while championing all of us who work with adults and education. We truly have a lot to be proud of this year.
A colleague of mine tells me that in winter we tend to ‘slump’ through, waiting for the first few signs of spring, but perhaps the end of winter is a good time to reflect on the year thus far. Perhaps we can highlight and savour the great work that has been done and then look forward to see what is coming next. For VALBEC, we still have a couple of PL sessions up our sleeves before the year closes; stay tuned for announcements on that one. And I am excited to say that the conference for next year is going to be a doozy. I cannot say much more about it at the moment, but watch this space!
So, with all this in mind, I encourage you to reflect on your achievements this year. You truly make a difference in the lives of adults, even if the weather tells you otherwise.

A VALBEC (Victorian Adult Literacy and Basic Educational Council) Professional Learning session presented by Shruti Malavde.
Come on a journey with us to explore the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence in the education sector, with a focus on empowering teachers. We will delve into practical applications of large language models, including lesson planning, content generation, and personalised learning.
Additionally, the session will cover the integration of AI tools in mobile phones, enabling on-the-go access to educational resources and real-time assistance. If time permits, we will also discuss how AI-powered features in Microsoft Office products can enhance teacher efficiency.
Join us to discover how AI can be a powerful ally in creating a more efficient and enriching educational experience for both teachers and students.
To emphasize the topic and introduce myself, I would like to use an AI-generated video for my bio.
